Jonathan Varnell is originally from Challedon in Columbia, South Carolina and currently lives with his wife and dogs in West Ashey, Charleston, South Carolina.
After buying a camera for the first time at age 32, a hobbyist interest in photography eventually turned into a pursuit of a formal art education, which culminated in graduating with top honors with a degree in Studio Art from the College of Charleston.
Jonathan has won several art commissions from local patrons, such as the North Charleston Arts Festival and the Town of Mount Pleasant.
In addition, Jonathan’s work has been featured in Charleston Magazine, Under The Radar at Redux Contemporary Art Center, and Young Contemporaries at the Halsey Institute in both 2020 and 2021, with a Best Sculpture award in 2020.
